Stills from Move Sequence, Cheri Overstreet, 2008
I chose these stills from my Move Sequence because they invoke mysterious emotion with their dramatic lighting. I am drawn to this theatrical lighting for this very reason. There is also a story told in each image about that particular area of space. As I continue to explore the theory of personal space I continue to search for these stories.

Wolf In Theater 2007

Changing Room 2007

Julia Fullerton-Batten
In Between
Randall Scott Gallery, Washington D.C.
September 13th-October 18th, 2008
This is my girl! I truly admire Julia's work and have been working with her subject matter as well. Julia explores the awkwardness of adolescence using amateur models who are actually experiencing that time in their life. Her theatricality and bordering surrealism draw me in every time.

Paul Insect
Poison
Lazarides Gallery, London
September 12th-21st
Insect's parings of aggression, adolescence, and sex meets for emotional and provocative works. He is said to be working out the frustrations of the Modern male, primitive urges versus contemporary expectations. I love this tension in his work and can see a primal honesty!

Sacred Heart (Red/Gold)
1994-2007
High chromium stainless steel with transparent color coating
Balloon Dog (Yellow)
1994-2000
High chromium stainless steel with transparent color coating

Jeff Koons on the Roof
now through October 26th, 2008
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY
I really wish I could see this exhibition! The juxtaposition of the high chromium, extremely eye-catching, sculptures of Jeff Koons against the New York City skyline must be outstanding!!!! Continuing to make art that reflects Koons' world and American culture he has really spoken to me with these sculptures. They scream to me about the little things in life that are ever so frivolous (balloon animals made by clowns and street performers, and candy hearts given on Valentine's Day). To me, these sculptures speak of the enormity of our society's extravagances.

Street Art Street Life: From the 1950's to Now

Bronx Museum, New York

September 14, 2008-January 25, 2009

A show about art created on the street is now open at the Bronx Museum. Filled with my favorite black and white street photographs from the 50's and 60's. I love the spontenaety that comes witrh using the street as your studio. This photo by Friedlander that is in the exhibition is from a fabulous series of like pictures he completed in the late 60's.

Jerry Uelsmann: Just Suppose
Modernbrook Gallery, Palo Alto, CA
September 5-November 4, 2008

I can't believe I forgot about ol' Jerry for a bit! He has been a fave of mine since I was quite a bit younger. But when you start going to school for art your professors want you to explore tons of different artists and not to focus on your famous faves (rightly so). But here I am again, drooling over some newer pieces he has hanging in California right now. Uelsmann's photographs are so seductive to me, and even more so because he still uses traditional darkroom techniques. Sometimes when I look at his images I desperately want to dive into his magnificent surreal world he creates. I was mainly drawn to this particular print as I have never seen it before. The lighting is luscious and the integration of images is seamless (as always). I have been having many dreams like this one lately!

Cell VII, 1998
Mixed Media

Louise Bourgeois
Guggenheim, New York
June 27-September 28, 2008

A friend of mine was telling me about these rooms that Louise Bourgeois had designed at the Gugge right now. His brother had gone to see the exhibition last week and was in total awe of these creations she was calling "cells". When I viewed them on the museum's website I too was in awe. Each space that she has constructed is filled with found objects that call to you with great intrigue. Depiction of the human condition through the display and placement of objects is part of what I am exploring in my current photo project. Thus, I was greatly attracted to these sculptures. Each object has its meaning, given to it by its owner. And each viewer could place a plethora of varying meanings based on their own experiences.

The 3 images above are from a recent series I did with models, focusing on reflections in their sunglasses. The model here, Maggie, is a good friend of mine who always throws an amusing element into the shoot. After donning the medical mask we decided to call this series "Ill Reflections". I was quite pleased at how the reflections in her sunglasses turned out. The mood that is created through combination of all the elements in the photographs is playful, yet odd enough to cause apprehension. I love that awkward tension!

Mermaid 41, 2008

Michael Dweck: Mermaids

Staley Wise Gallery, New York

I have always imagined photographing water to be a difficult task. To really capture the ripples, the reflections, the play of light should take a master. Thus, I admire Michael Dweck's series entitled "Mermaids". Not only has he mastered the portrayal of sparkling, dream-like waters, but he has taken this skill further by the variance in conditions and abstractions of the swimming figures.

Dreams are Like Water, 2008 Pigment Print

Polixexi Papapetron: Games of Consequence
Foley Gallery, New York
September 4-October 11, 2008

I chose this photograph as it embodies two elements that I have been focusing on in my recent work: dramatic lighting and the plight of adolescence. This Australian photographer photographs scenes of childhood (real and fantasy) in her native surroundings. The innocence of the children and the rocky landscapes of Australia blend in her photographs to create cinematic-looking stills.

Convenience Store, 29 Palms, California, 2006
Platinum Palladium Print

Scott Davis: Land of Sunshine

Hous Projects Gallery, NY
June 26-September 6, 2008

Platinum Palladium prints shot with a homemade large format view camera adorn the walls of the Hous Projects Gallery in New York City. Taken at night with minimal light sources Davis' images are mysterious and leave me wondering about what shady events are taking place in the deep shadows. I have always been drawn to saturated photos such as these.
